Real Estate Video Blog Copy-Cats (with video)

Posted by - Sam Prochazka 6 Comments Posted in Marketing

Been sold on video-blogging as the next big thing? Don’t buy too quickly – video blogs can be a fantastic way to communicate with customers, but without originality they make even the most seasoned professional look like a copy-cat.

One of these videos is not like the other ones…

Where’s the most popular place for a REALTOR® to shoot a video from? A car, of course:

Wow – there are THOUSANDS of these (it’s kinda funny if you play them all at the same time)! One REALTOR® started filming from his car a few years ago and now everyone has to jump on the bandwagon? It’s like everything  – the first person will get all the fame and fortune – everyone else is just a “me too”.

Plenty of room

There’s still plenty of room in the video blogging world, but like everything, differentiation is the key – here’s a video from a REALTOR in Calgary (search for Calgary REALTOR in youtube.com and he comes up first!):

This video is a little long, but Kudos to the production quality and getting the point across in an original way. As of today he’s got over 15000 views, more than all the car-talkers combined!

  1. Being copied should be a source of pride, the ones copying obviously think of you in a high manner, all is well. Cracked me up when I played them at the same time.

  2. It is indeed very amusing when you start all the videos at once! Bill’s is very good. I use blogging and Facebook a lot (have done for some years) but try to keep it very light touch on real estate… for me, these tools are more about sharing something of yourself… it allows clients and potential clients a chance to get a sense of who you are.

    Hi Karen,

As per your request I’ve replaced your video with another. The point here is not to take a jab at anyone, but rather demonstrate the point that a one-time good idea can be destroyed by thousands of “me toos.” Believe it or not there are already youtube videos making fun of car-talking REALTORS… This could become a mainstream thing, and a point of ridicule for the profession.

Though I’m sure your presentation is full of valuable information, it gets lost in the chorus of voices trying to sell expertise from the front seats of their cars.

Originality is key, and in the wide-open VLogging world, there’s HUGE opportunity to carve out a niche and attract customers.

Hi guys nice slice at my video! If you watch my short video you will see I am aiming at “new REALTORS” and how they can try to obtain New Business.

I am not just blabbing mindlessly in my car. I currently teach new REALTORS for BCREA and thought it would be nice to Vlog some new ideas for them starting out in their careers and give them some ideas to get their feet wet in a rather difficult economy and difficult career where the failure rate is so high.

I don’t Vlog to gain the public’s confidence or credibility. As a current REALTOR franchise owner, broker/owner, and paid instructor I have earned everything the old fashioned way working for it..

Vincent refers to it as, “certainly is an odd trend that has emerged in the industry recently – point a camera at yourself while driving, talk about basically nothing, then post it up online under some misguided assumption that it will magically increase your credibility and customer appeal.”

False. Could you find another guinea pig to make fun of? Much appreciated!

Great idea – I think I would like to do something like this.

The fact remains that people look to us for something of value. A random stream of consciousness that moves in and out of real estate-related musings doesn’t make a commission more palatable to customers.

A carefully planned weekly/monthly video detailing market trends/opportunities/warnrings/etc. that are relevant to your target market would be a better place to start. Of course, spending more than $0 on production is also probably a good idea.
