I guarantee that everyone reading this is guilty of at least one of these email mistakes:
- HTML email. Everyone wants to look their best and be remembered, so it’s a good idea to include a header image in your emails right? Wrong. Here’s why:
- Emails look different in different email programs. You might think that because your email looks great on your machine, it’ll look great on everyone’s… Think again. There’s a good chance your email header sits on top of the text and makes it impossible for your customers to read your emails.
- HTML emails get marked as spam. While other software gets smarter, spam filters get dumber. These days so much as a link in an email is enough to prevent it from reaching your customers. Even one email not getting through can cost you serious dollars.
- HTML Emails are difficult to write. Every time you want to insert a new line, you have to hold the shift key… or wait, was it the control key… - Auto responders. What do you do when you see a, “back in 5 minutes,” sign in a store window? Do you wait? Probably not – I know I don’t. An auto responder tells a customer that you’re not mobile and may take hours or days to get back to them. Chances are, if they don’t already work with you, they’re not going to now.
- Taking too long to respond. If you take more than a few hours to respond to an email, chances are your prospective customer has moved on.
- Spelling. This is the BIGGEST mistake Realtors make and demonstrates a complete lack of attention to detail. If you can’t send an email without spelling errors, then don’t send one at all.

I have been in real estate a long time and must be doing something right because 98% of my business is referral. The problem with this is, whenever I get e-mails, I tend to respond slowly because I don’t want to deal with people who expect me to respond “right now”. But when I do respond quickly, many prospects are very thankful for the “quick response”. So…I am slowly learning to swallow my pride and am calling people back sooner…and it is working. That quick response is so important.
